Options:There are 3 options.
Option 1: Classical Conditioning
Using an original example (not from the notes or textbook), identify a common human response that is classically conditioned.
Identify the CS, US, CR and UR.
Present the stages arranged as I did in the diagram, use spaces to be sure columns are aligned as well as proper rows.
Explain how the response is involuntary.
NOTE: checking your phone after the chime is NOT Classical Conditioning – don’t try to use that as an example!
Option 2: Operant Conditioning.
Provide the following information:
A single behavior that will be subject to Operant Conditioning. (NOTE: it must be original – not from the notes or textbook)
Explain how the behavior is under voluntary control.
Identify Antecedents (review this in the notes above if you are unclear).
Consequences: Identify all that apply, and list as follows:
Positive Reinforcement
Negative Reinforcement
Positive Punishment
Negative Punishment
Explain how these consequences will act upon the learner to change the likelihood the behavior will be repeated.
Option 3: Memory
For this assignment, there are a lot of specific requirements. Read the following instructions carefully
You will need to enlist the aid of a friend or family member to serve as a memory-partner.
Identify a Flashbulb Memory type of event, where both of you were present together in the same place at the same time (NOTE: most people who lose credit on this do so because they describe a situation where they and their memory-partner were not together at the time of the event!).
It could be when you first heard news of the Boston bombing, a similar public event, or a personal event that would trigger the same type of flashbulb memory (first kiss, car accident, buying your first car, receiving news of a death, birth, or family tragedy, etc.
NOTE: By definition, the “flashbulb” moment is something like the instant that a camera flash goes off. So, it is a specific moment, not an event. (Example: The moment you see your favorite cousin at a family reunion, NOT the whole day of the reunion).
It should be something where you were at least 15 years old, so childhood memory issues don’t affect it.
An event from at least 3 years ago would be best, so there’s time for the memories to fade and be modified.
Write out the details of your flashbulb memory. The more detail, the better. Who was there? What room were you in and what was in the room? What were you doing just prior to the event?
Ask your friend or family member to tell her/his memory of the event. Try to have them report all the details.
Compare your written account and that of your friend or family member. Look for both consistencies and inconsistencies in your accounts of the event.

What you put in your report:
Name the event and describe it “enough” (if it was a major public historical event, you can just name it – if it was a personal event, describe it briefly).
Provide an account of the elements of the flashbulb memory that you and your memory-partner agreed upon, and those you recalled differently.
Identify anything you question or change your mind about in your original descriiption.
Try to explain what would cause each of you to remember differently, on those aspects you didn’t recall the same way.
Grading Rubrics:
These are mini-papers. They may be only a paragraph, or a page, depending on what is needed to accomplish the expectations of the assignment. There is at least one for each of the 8 class sections. Brief Assignments are graded according to these criteria:
Accuracy of content – for example, if you are giving an example of Classical Conditioning, does your example accurately fit that concept.
Completeness of your response – do you adequately address all parts of the prompt?
Is the paper written in a way that conforms to the Quality of Written Work statement in this syllabus?
Grading will be 10, 7, 4, or 0 points, related to Excellent, Adequate, Partially Adequate, Inadequate.
