Explain either Albert Carr’s argument for the claim that business ethics is a kind of game ethics or Milton Friedman’s argument for the claim that the social responsibility of business is to make profits (but not both).
1. Explain either Albert Carr’s argument for the claim that business ethics
is a kind of game ethics or Milton Friedman’s argument for the claim that the
social responsibility of business is to make profits (but not both). Then
raise and evaluate an objection to the argument. The objection can be one of
your own or one from either the Sen reading or the Stout reading. Your thesis
should answer the following question: does this objection show that the
argument is wrong, or is there some way of responding to it?
2. Explain and evaluate Allen Wood’s argument for the claim that advertising
as an institution is harmfully manipulative. In order to do this, you need to
1) explain Wood’s theory of manipulation, 2) explain his argument against
advertising and 3) raise and evaluate an objection to his argument.
When writing your paper make sure you do the following things:
Clearly explain the claim the author is defending.
Clearly explain the author’s argument for this claim.
Pose an objection to the author’s argument (note that you do not need
to argue that this objection works)
Evaluate the objection.
You should have a thesis for your paper. Your thesis should look like something
like this:
X’s argument for the claim that Y fails because Z; or
X’s argument faces an objection Y, but the objection is wrong because Z
You should make a claim about whether the author’s argument fails because of
the objection you consider or whether the objection can be successfully
avoided.
