You will need two direct quotations from Plato’s Apology in this paper. For more information on citations, please see the “Position Paper Guidelines” on our Canvas page.
DESCRIPTION: Your paper should be focused on the issue of values and happiness, which we have been discussing in Plato’s Apology. You should address the following questions
(Note that you are not to write your paper in the form of a Q&A but rather as a fully formed paper with an introduction, main body, and conclusion. These questions are simply here to help you to focus your paper):
1) What are the primary values (“goods”) in your life? What are the things you value most. Why are these the things that you value most?
2) What do you think constitutes human happiness? REMEMBER THAT YOU SHOULD NOT GIVE A PURELY RELATIVIST ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION (e.g. “happiness is totally subjective,” “happiness is whatever you think it is”). Think about what might be essential elements of human happiness for everyone.
3) In what way can Plato’s text help us to think about values and happiness? What are some of the arguments Plato gives for considering certain kinds of values more important than others?
