Discussion Prompt: Understanding Cultural Bias
Recent research (Counts et al., 2018) tells us that students from culturally diverse backgrounds have a higher likelihood of receiving an office referral or other disciplinary measures related to classroom behavior than do their white peers. It is critical that all teachers are aware of this disparity and actively address any personal biases that may impact their teaching. As you prepare for your initial discussion post, take the Project Implicit bias survey – Race test and reflect on your results. Before you can begin the survey you will need to accept the disclaimer and then scroll down the next page to locate the Race survey. After reflecting, please answer these questions:
What did you learn about yourself by taking this survey?
Based on the results, name 3 specific actions you will need to take in your own classroom to ensure that your personal biases won’t impact your teaching?
What burning questions do you have about the impact of cultural background on classroom behavior management?
