Q1: While the focus of this course is the American West, considering the nature of Turner’s argument for the role of the West in the development of American identity, and our focus on the rise of New Western history, a comparison between the Turner and Innis provides an opportunity for placing the development of the American West in a larger context. Using Francis’s “Turner versus Innis: Bridging the Gap” and Kaye’s “An Innis, not a Turner,” how has the interpretation of the American West and Canadian West changed? What do we learn about the American West in discussing the Canadian West?
