What would you do differently if you were in a similar situation again?
Submit three communication journals as described in chapter 2 of A Manager’s Guide to Listening and Problem Solving. Your communication journals can be from work, home, or other associations.
Focus Scenarios
Consider the following types of scenarios:
Workplace problems, especially dealing with workplace conflict.
Dealing with stress in the workplace.
Situations involving discipline and motivation.
Concerning individual or organizational values.
Application to communication in the emergency services.
Journal writing allows you to think about your behavior. As you write and ponder, your actions you realize how you can improve. Writing also reinforces your commitment to change. During the next week write at least five journal entries for situations where miscommunication seems to have occurred. If you continue to write journals, you will see a marked improvement in your communication.
Format
Use the following format:
Describe the communication situation
Evaluate how well you did
Reflect on the skills you used (or didn’t use)
Describe the problem-solving approach and your use of communication skills
Describe the over effect (the results) of your communication
Make recommendations for change
